 A.C.E. Training Program

The Avian Care and Education (ACE) Program is a short-term, intensive training opportunity for individuals who are already experienced in working with birds in captivity or college students/graduates that are particularly interested in increasing their knowledge and proficiency in aviculture before applying for permanent employment. The intent of the ACE program is to provide a broad range of training in aviculture, including techniques that have made the waterfowl husbandry program at LRWC particularly successful.

The program duration is at least one week with a maximum of two weeks. Students can participate throughout the year but the greatest breath of experience is available between June and August when the breeding season is in full swing. Tuition includes on-site housing.

During the ACE program students learn through hands-on experience alongside our skilled staff.  Participants receive training in many aspects of aviculture, including but not limited to:

  • Dietary requirements and feed choices
  • Feeding techniques and diet preparation
  • Species-specific housing requirements
  • Enclosure/pool design and layout
  • Nest box design and placement
  • Incubator/hatcher settings and operation
  • Vent sexing and pinioning
  • Closed banding and other marking techniques
  • Bird capture and handling
  • Safe transport and shipping logistics/requirements
  • Enclosure landscaping/upkeep
  • First aid/basic supportive care

For participants interested in learning more about the use of birds in education programs, we can offer experience imprinting and training birds for presentations ranging from classroom lessons to free-flight demonstrations.

Those interested in applying should contact Cate Hogan, LRWC administrator.  Please provide a letter detailing your experience in aviculture along with particular areas of training interest.
