About the Honoree - Helen Macdonald

Helen Macdonald is a writer, poet, illustrator, naturalist, and historian of science. She is also the author of the award-winning book H Is for Hawk. Hailed as an “instant classic” (Dwight Garner, The New York Times), Helen’s memoir took the literary world by storm, landing on almost every end of the year “best of” list. Beloved by literary critics, award panels, and readers alike, H Is for Hawk is a distinctive, surprising blend of nature writing and memoir from a very gifted writer. On one level it is the truly remarkable story of one woman’s resolve to raise and train the most bloodthirsty of birds: the goshawk. On another, it is a heartwrenching account of Helen’s grief at the sudden death of her father and a gripping piece of nature writing that “reads like a thriller” (The Guardian).

Helen has also authored a cultural history of falcons, Falcon, and three collections of poetry. She has worked as a professional falconer and has assisted with the management of raptor research and conservation projects across Eurasia. She now contributes to The New York Times Magazine. Her features explore the natural world and "piece together how and why we see landscapes and creatures as we do, how we value them and why we think we should protect them,” “questions to which the answers are simply about how we can save the world” (Helen Macdonald).

Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy is thrilled to award Helen its Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award in recognition of her inspiring dedication to birds and the environment. In her own words, if her writing “can just make a few people love [the natural world] more, or maybe feel that they have a stake in this, then that’s good.”
