His work has been featured in The New York Times, TIME, Audubon, National Geographic, and elsewhere. Carl’s writing about the living world has won a MacArthur “Genius Grant”; Pew and Guggenheim Fellowships; book awards from Lannan, Orion, and the National Academies; and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. Carl is the author of the noted book Song for the Blue Ocean, and his most recent work is Beyond Words; What Animals Think and Feel.

Carl earned a PhD in ecology from Rutgers studying seabirds, then spent a decade working to ban high-seas drift nets and to overhaul U.S. fishing policy. Recently, Carl hosted the PBS series Saving the Ocean.

Carl is now the first Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and is the founding president of the not-for-profit Safina Center, which works to advance the case for life on Earth by fusing scientific understanding, emotional connection, and a moral call to action.

The Livingston Ripley Waterfowl Conservancy is thrilled to award Carl its Lifetime Conservation Achievement Award in recognition of his dedication and lifelong commitment to environmental conservation, the ocean, birds, and indeed all life on earth.

M. Catherine Smith - Community Leadership Award recipient

Catherine Smith will receive the Conservancy’s Community Leadership Award for her dedication to the restoration and preservation of parks, greenways, and urban communities.

Cathy serves on the boards of the Leever Foundation, the Leavenworth Foundation, and the Waterbury Greenway Committee. As president of the Fulton Park Conservancy, Cathy has helped spearhead the historic renovation and restoration of the Warming Hut and Garden Cottage in Waterbury’s Fulton Park.
