Sue Sheaffer joined the Conservancy in 2008 as the Director of Research and Conservation.   Sue comes to us from Cornell University, where she spent over 20 years specializing in waterfowl biology and management.  Sue received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Wildlife Biology from the University of Michigan, and a PhD from Oregon State University in Wildlife Science.  She has also received extensive training in statistical methods for analyzing the information generated from birds carrying all type of markers, including leg bands, neck collars, and radio transmitters.   Her interest in the study of marked birds has allowed her to work with such species as Canada geese, tundra swans, mallard ducks, and northern pintail ducks, along with federal, state, and private organizations and individuals from across much of the U.S. and Canada.

In joining the LRWC team, Sue is committed to developing a multi-dimensional program in which national and international field research, along with a premier captive breeding facility, will integrate to produce and maintain a significant contribution to the management and conservation of waterfowl and their habitats throughout the world.

Ian Gereg joined the Conservancy team as a volunteer in 1998.  His lifelong interest in birds, especially in waterfowl and aviculture has led him across the country in search of experience in the captive management of waterfowl.  Through internships and positions at the Conservancy, the Connecticut Waterfowl Trust, the Alaska SeaLife Center, multiple private waterfowl collections, and his own collection, Ian has accrued working experience with over 100 species of ducks, geese, and swans in addition to a variety of other groups of birds. Hired in 2004 as the Conservancy’s aviculturist, Ian is currently the Director of Aviculture and Education, managing the captive waterfowl collection and coordinating LRWC’s on and off-site education programs.

Ian received a Bachelor’s degree in environmental education from Unity College, and is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in wildlife management from the State University of New York’s School of Environmental Science and Forestry.
